I tried to not be completely selfish in making my 'ultimate' Flyleaf set list, which might defeat the purpose of doing one, but hey! I wanted to make it a realistic tour set list that they could play every night to people who knew their music, to people who had no idea who they were, and to those people who have only heard Flyleaf on the radio.
I think
Again would be the perfect album opener, and I think it would translate well live in that way. It's a brand new song that not a lot of people know, but it's one, I feel, that people go home remembering. Following it up with a big radio hit that
everybody knows seemed like a good idea, so I stuck
I'm So Sick towards the beginning. A lot of people probably wouldn't expect that too, which is interesting.
Broken Wings is a great, epic song that lots of fans who know the band more in depth tend to love. The band doesn't play it anymore, which is a shame.
Breathe Today is always well received. It's a hard song with a great message. I've heard it a thousand times, but I think it's really important for them to play just because of what it says.
Have We Lost is a great new song, and it sounds great live. Go Sameer.
Missing -- it's new and sounds quick and catchy from the Rolling Stone preview. It'd be good to contrast Have We Lost, which is a little on the slower side.
You Are My Joy/From The Inside Out is an AMAZING cover, and I hope they don't remove it from the set list any time soon. Sticking a worship song in the middle of their set is pretty awesome.
I chose to couple
Okay and
Ocean Waves together because of the meanings of both songs. Namely the "This is too important for us to forget" line in Okay made me want to do that. It kind of goes with the message of Ocean Waves, I think. Ocean Waves is an urgent song about not letting the time you have in this world go to waste, which is important to remember. That in turn, goes hand in hand with the album title "Memento Mori". Putting this into the middle of the set to kind of bring attention to that made sense to me.
After that, I chose to put
Beautiful Bride. That song is really growing on me. It's a unique song that really gets the energy up at live shows. To sustain that energy, I figured
Fully Alive would be a great follow up.
So I Thought & There For You are kind of more ballad Flyleaf songs, so I figured it'd be good to set a slower tone for a little while. They kind of set the pace for
Penholder which is such an amazing song. They played it live at Tink's in Scranton a few years back, and Lacey prefaced the song with a story about how "Penholder" talks about why they do what they do. In that respect, it compliments There For You, because I think that same message is in that song as well. It all ties back to Jesus, and how he's the reason for everything.
Thennnnnn!
All Around Me. The one that pretty much everyone waits for when they go to a Flyleaf show. This song gets the biggest reaction, so it's good to put it near the end to pique everyone's attention.
Then I think it'd be cool to close the show with a combo of
Sorrow and
Arise. Sorrow kind of talks about how depression and sadness will last through the night, and at the end it says "Joy Will Come". To follow that up with
Arise which, just from the word alone, pretty much says to pick yourself up and rise above the bad things, seems kinda perfect. I also have heard that this song is pretty epic, and epic songs are always good to end the show with.
All in all, I wanted to split up the big hits to the beginning/middle/end of the set evenly. I also threw in older songs that the more in depth fans could appreciate, plenty of new stuff, and plenty of songs from their debut record.
My explanation is really long-winded. Hopefully it wasn't too boring.
